Abstract

This study aims to develop an expert system for determining student guidance and counseling services using the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method. The system is designed to assist guidance and counseling (GC) teachers in conducting early detection of student problems more quickly, objectively, and accurately. In practice, GC teachers often face challenges in identifying students who require special assistance, particularly when dealing with a large number of students and limited observation time. Student problems are also complex, encompassing academic, behavioral, emotional, social, and psychological aspects that are interconnected. Therefore, an intelligent system is needed to provide recommendations for appropriate guidance services based on a structured data analysis process. The Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method is applied in this study because of its ability to handle multi-criteria decision-making in a simple yet effective way. Each student is evaluated based on five main criteria: academic performance, behavior, emotional condition, social interaction, and stress level. Each criterion is assigned a specific weight that reflects its importance in the final decision. The SAW computation process involves normalization, weighting, and ranking stages to produce recommendations for students who require counseling services the most. The testing results show that the developed expert system can provide counseling service recommendations with an accuracy rate of 85% compared to the GC teacher’s manual evaluation. These findings indicate that the SAW-based expert system can serve as an effective tool for early detection of student problems while improving the efficiency and accuracy of guidance and counseling services in schools. Thus, the implementation of this system supports GC teachers in making more objective, targeted, and data-driven decisions.
